Grex P635 Headless Micro Pinner, 2nd of a series of 6 models
Voted 2005 Best New Tool by Popular Woodworking Magazine (December, 2005, page 63)
WOOD Magazine, September 2005, page 38 - Editor test-drive:"As far as I'm concern, the Grex P-635 is the Lexus of pinners, with a ton of great features that put it at the top of the pack. For example, with some pinners, you must manually adjust the magazine for different fastener lengths: This tool self-adjusts for pins from 1/2" to 1 3/8", so you just load and fire. The P635 has no adjustment for setting the drive depth of fasteners, but regardless of the length of pin or hardness of the wood, it set them to perfect depth."
"This is the only pinner we tested that provides a removable no-mar tip to reduce dimping, and it does a good job protecting even soft woods when using moderate pressure. That tip also sports index lines on all four sides for precise placement of pins in a narrow workpiece." Tested by Chuck Hedlund, Master Craftsman.
Why buy?
"23 gauge pinners punch fasteners so fine (about the same diameter as a household straight pin) that they won't split even the thin or brittle stock. Unlike the 18-gauge brads or finish nails, the pins lack heads, sot the tiny entry hole can be filled with a quick swipe of a wax filler stick after finishing. Despite their headless nature, we found that pins hold surprisingly well - - in fact, a pin driven more than halfway into hardwood proves almost impossible to pull out. Still, for a long-lasting hold, in most cases you should apply glue to parts pinned together. Pinners have another advantage over brad nailers: There's no safety tip to keep the tool from getting tight into corners." WOOD magazine September 2005, page 38
Brian Caldwell of Wood Shop News interviews Jerry Carter, spokesman for Grex Power Tools. You may wish to read the complete article. Here is a tidbit:
The Grex 1-3/8" headless pinner is designed for applications such as finish and trim work, molding and decorative trim, dowel and joint pinning, lightweight paneling, external softwood trim, and display and sign work. The tool measures 7-3/4" x 7-1/2" x 2", weighs about 2-1/4 lbs. and operates at a pressure between 80 and 100 psi. The fastener capacity is around 100 pins. Carter noted that the tool is suited for cabinet shops, but has other uses.
“Admittedly, a cabinet shop is a good prospect, but we sell an awful lot of these tools to a lot of folks who are just do-it-yourselfers, weekend guys. Yes, it is good for crown molding; yes it is good for appliques; but it is good to use anywhere where you want to glue something, fasten it together, and hold it until the glue sets without splitting the wood or making a large hole that has to be filled.”
The Grex 23-gauge 1-3/8" headless pinner, model P635, is usually priced between $230 and $260.
Adjust free magazine. You do not have to set up for each different size pin.
Powerful motor allows fasteners to penetrate the hardest materials as maple.
Narrow nose reaches tight areas and corners for detailed finish work.
Rear exhaust with built-in silencer to reduce exhaust sound and spray exhaust away from work area.
Forget splitting your maple frames with this 23 gauge. We have used this for over one year and have yet to split a maple frame. We now rarely use the Senco Pinner.
This powerful tool is indispensable to the craftsman and frame shop. Nails from 3/8" to 1 3/8".
This tool is rapidly becoming the pinner of choice for milling companies and cabinet shops.
You will not have the jamming problem as in the "other" 23 gauge micro pinner.
